Amanita longipes Bas ex Tulloss & Jenkins Cap 2.5-8cm across, subglobose then broadly convex; white, pale grayish brown, or buff at center, with a dense covering of soft floccose-pulverulent veil sometimes forming larger warts at center. Gills adnate, crowded, narrow, with traces of floccose veil on margins; whitish. Stem 25-140 x 5-20mm, tapered upward then flaring at extreme apex; base swollen, usually slightly rooting; surface with similar floccose veil material to cap, sometimes staining brick red at base. Flesh white to slightly grayish. Odor none or very slight, of disinfectant(?). Taste not distinctive. Spores cylindrical, amyloid, 8.4-17.5(20.3) x 4.2-7(7.7)µ. Deposit white. Habitat singly in sandy soil under oaks and pines. Found from Massachusetts to Alabama. Season August-September. Edibility not known - avoid, many amanitas contain poisonous toxins. |
